Every child deserve his/her childhood
“I
will marry when I want”
“My
parent cannot force me to marry”
Or
even my brother and sister cannot force me to marry”
No
one in the world can force me to marry
“Even if you beat me”
“Even
if you chase me away”
“Even
if you do anything bad to me”
“But
not before I am well educated”
“I’ll marry when I want”
This
poem is written by a 13 years old girl from Malawi, one of the poorest
countries in the southeastern Africa.
Her name is Ellie Perri the warriors that fight for the children human
right. This poem is a representation of her sad feeling for not being
protected, for not being listened by the people around her. Even their parent
or the most valuable people in their life. Ladies and gentleman. This is a reality that exists in our life, but not
everyone aware, and not everyone cares about this issues. Yes exactly, it is
about the child marriage, one of the most human right violation that may cause
fatal consequences. Child marriage happened in the most of the country in the
world. India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Brazil, Ethiopia, Pakistan, and also
Indonesia are nominated as the 7th countries with high numbers of child
marriage in the world that will bring more harm than good.
Well,
l I would like to tell you my experience last year, I attended the activate
talk held by UNICEF Indonesia in Netherland Embassy. We talk with the expert
about the child marriage effect. At that
time, I started to realize that child marriage is a serious issue that should
be prevented and that should be ended. Why child marriage should be ended?
Here
is the horrible fact about what happening in this world. 13.5 million girls
marry before the age of 18, one of 9 girls are married before their 15 years
old birthday, and about 16 million girls will marry by 2030, and it has
destroyed 700 Million girls childhood. From this data, we can see child
marriage are successfully robbed their innocence and they cannot explore a
personal opportunity and childhood in life.
Then,
perhaps you wondering in your mind, why child marriage exists. Gender
inequality, insecurity, culture, lack of education, and the most influences
factor that can cause child marriage exist in this world is Poverty. Poverty
can make everybody blinded. It can be seen, when the parent forces their
children to marriage to transfer their burden of life to the old husband that
has a literally different age with their daughter. In Africa, the girls who
just begin their puberty, they send to the initiation camp by the parent. So,
What actually initiation camp?? the
initiation camp is a camp where the puberty girl in Malawi are trapped, and
they are taught how to sexually please a man, how to serve, groom like a wife.
They call it a very special day. When the old man comes to sleep with the
little girl. After they celebrate The girl cry, the warriors cry. They are
forced, they are helpless and no one can feel their pain.
Can
you imagine? When you were young and just begin your puberty. Then your parent
told you, hey my daughter you should go to the initiation camp to learn about
sex because your old husband will wait for you in the near future. Ladies and
gentleman, the child marriage bringing more harm than good to the mental and
physical disorder. They are scared, they are hurt, they feel violated with
their husband and it can suffer dangerous to their mental and physical
development. A girl who comes from the India at the age of 15 years old already
has 5 children. 60 percent more likely to die in the first year of life. The
children get trauma, some end up pregnant and 5000 people are contracted by
HIV/ AIDS and often sexually transmitted disease.
Child marriage is actually violation against
human right. Even our government has already made a law to end up child
marriage but it is not enough. Together we can inform the people and educate
the communities about the dangers of child marriage. As a young generation, we
can do something for a better change. By empowering and educating the children
to explore their potential and life skills, or we can actively engage in some
activity such as UNICEF, and you can donate a gift for the victim of Child
marriage by visiting the website girls are not bride and it can help the victim
of child marriage all around the world.
We
as the agent of change cannot remind stay still. We cannot do close our eyes,
and ear. It is the time that we need to make a move. With your help, we can let
the children be children and set them free like a bird in the sky that will
lift up their family, give a contribution to the community, and country out of
poverty.
